Golf key for sports tourism, says Minister

THE government has expressed determination to develop golf and make it play key role in promotion of sports tourism in order to boost the sector in the country.

Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Harrison Mwakyembe, made the remarks recently, while closing this year’s Tanzania Open Golf Championship at Kili Golf and Wildlife Resort in Arusha.

Minister Mwakyembe ordered the Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) to engage his ministry in their activities, so that they could chip in useful ideas on how to run and develope the game in the country.

“We want golf to be a sport for tourism; I’ve seen its potential here. I’m told that next year, more golfers from outside the country will come as the club is planning to host an international and popular tournament called Sunshine Tour.

“This is a good idea ... we want to attract a huge number of foreign golfers and make sure that after the tournament, they also have an opportunity to visit our tourists attraction centres,” said Minister Mwakyembe, while also promising to talk to tourism minister to support the initiative.

The minister commended the management Kili Golf and Wildlife Resort, saying that he was surprised to see such an incredible, wonderful sporting facility in Arusha.

“I’m impressed for sure ... this is perhaps one of the best golf courses in the region, I’m also happy to see many young players at the event, I encourage them to take the sport seriously,” he said.

Minister Mwakyembe said the government will continue to provide necessary support, including allocating land for individuals or companies wishing to invest in sports.

He also paid tribute to Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) Lugalo Golf Club for the efforts they make to engage many youth into the sport and compete in the tournament in which, most of them also won different titles.
