A PRIVATE ranch in Mvomero district is the venue of the final round of this year’s National Rally Championship (NRC), going into action on December 16 as Mkwawa Water Rally.
The organisers, Mount Uluguru Motor Sports Club confirmed yesterday that the new routes all to be staged in a private ranch owned by Mtibwa Sugar Company, has been picked solely for a safety reason.
The Club’s official, Amos Makau told the ‘Daily News’ that the choice of the circuit inside the ranch also aims to give spectators an opportunity to watch cars’ spectacular actions within a walking distance.
“We hope both drivers and spectators will enjoy the rally as the safest, but most thrilling event,” he said. He said the rally will be officially flagged off on December 16 with a Super Special Stage at Tobacco Processing Factory ground in Morogoro municipality.
The stage’s fastest driver, according to Makau will be the first off ramp when the competition shifts to Mvomero in the second day, December 17 final stage. Iringa-based Mkwawa Pure Drinking Water has once again bankrolled the rally following a success in the inaugural event last year.
With Arusha’s Gerald Miller racing unassailable in seeding points earning, Majibora team of Harinder Deere and Moses Matovu are breathing fire not far behind him and so are Dharam Pandya and Gurpal Sandhu, both high-placed on point log.
Makau said other title favourites include Jamil Khan from Dar es Salaam, home-based hero, Samir Nahdi and Harri Singh trio from Kilimanjaro are drivers to watch in the event.
Uluguru Rally, according to Makau is touted as the most adventurous event of the season with dozens of ‘fast and furious’ cars including Mitsubishi Evos, Subaru Impreza’s and Porsches revving-off in areas around Morogoro municipality.
This year’s event, according to Makau, has drawn drivers from six clubs based in Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Iringa and Morogoro regions. “There are many new drivers and navigators who have emerged to challenge on the seasoned racers,” he said.
Rallying is a testament of resilience and hard work. “We are calling upon rally fans to turn up in large numbers to cheer on their favourite drivers,” said Makau.
Ahmed Huwel, whose company has sponsored this year’s thriller, confirmed he will compete in the event to show the young drivers that he was not the 2007 champion for nothing.
“I will be there to teach the young drivers how to beat dusty road challenges,” he bragged
