The feud between Tupac Shakur and Nas was a fairly well-chronicled one, but unlike ‘Pac’s beef with The Notorious B.I.G., the fall-out between the two has never been documented through photos. In fact, there wasn’t even a picture of them together—until now.
On Tuesday (Oct. 10), an Instagram account by the name of contact.high.project uploaded a never-before seen image of ‘Pac and Nas together shortly before or after his performance at New York City’s Palladium on July 23, 1993. The image belongs to a contact sheet from the show. ‘Pac’s also in photos with Redman.
At the time, at least two years before he’d become a “Bad Boy Killa” and a symbol of unrepentant gangsta rap, ‘Pac was more of a mid-level rap star. Nas, on the other hand, had yet to drop Illmatic, the album that would, just a short time later, make him the prince of New York City hip-hop. Both were pretty much on the brink of superstardom—and a pretty intense feud.
In the fall of 1995, fresh out of prison for a sexual assault conviction, ‘Pac launched what seemed like a war on the whole East Coast, believeing Biggie and Bad Boy played a role in his being shot in the fall of 1994. Due perhaps to Nas’
Queensbridge connection to Mobb Deep, a duo ‘Pac was feuding with at the time, or simply his relationship with Biggie, or perceived subliminal disses, or a combination of all those things, ‘Pac grew to dislike the burgeoning East Coast superstar.
Although members of the Outlawz and Nas himself have said that ‘Pac and Nas squashed their beef during the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards, Tupac went on to diss Nas on his first posthumously released album, The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory.
