BidVest Wits have received a timely boost ahead of Saturday’s Telkom Knockout final with the return to fitness of a number of key defenders so that coach Gavin Hunt can pick a first choice backline against Bloemfontein Celtic at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu,
Thulani Hlatshwayo and Buhle Mkhwanazi, he has his first-choice centre-back pairing, with Bongani Khumalo in reserve, as well as his first-choice fullbacks in Sifiso Hlanti on the left and Nazeer Allie on the right.
"This is the first time this season that I have had my defence back. Nobody else in this whole league has gone through what I have gone through," Hunt told reporters on the eve of the decider.
Hunt had a chance for a dress rehearsal with the backline in last Saturday’s goalless draw at Maritzburg United.
Nazeer Allie played his first game. 'Tyson' Hlatshwayo played his first game [also for three weeks]. Buhle has been out for six months. So we had our defence back that won us the league last season.
"What happens? Clean sheet, hallelujah, simple. So I've been hammered, I have taken an absolute hammering and rightly so, but the guys who came in have been good,” said Hunt.
