Arusha triumphs in women Athletics


ARUSHA region emerged the overall winners of the National Women Athletics Championships, which ended yesterday at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Arusha were declared winners after hauling two gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze medal respectively, while the hosts Dar es Salaam finished as runners-up after getting two gold medals and one bronze medal.

The competition which was officially closed by the Japan Ambassador to Tanzania, Masaharu Yoshida, saw the fourth position going to Zanzibar’s Kaskazini Unguja, which claimed one gold medal and one silver medal from the tight competition.

Coastal region finished fifth with one gold medal and a single silver medal, while Tabora occupied number six with one gold medal and one silver medal respectively. Dodoma were seventh on the list after claiming one gold medal and a single bronze medal, whereas Kilimanjaro occupied eighth position after collecting one gold medal.

The eye-catching moment in yesterday’s competition was the 5,000 metres race in which Mwanza based athlete Silvia Masatu, despite running barefooted, came from behind to outpace Amina Mohamed from Arusha to win the race, after clocking 17:52:00.

Amina was second in the race as she covered her distance in 18:03:37, while Anastazia Dolimongo from Shinyanga scooped third slot after racing for 18:06:50.

The competition was organised by the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports together with the National Sports Council (NSC) with sponsorship from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The aim was to get a cream of athletes to form the national team, which will compete in 2020 Olympics to be staged in Tokyo, Japan.
